This is one of the best examples of why we need to allow students to follow their passions in schools, and why we need to bring back mentor-ship relationship in society and allow students to really learn with adults, not just sit in rooms and fill out worksheets or answer text book or teacher driven questions. I highly recommend this movie. Streaming on netflix now!
I remember that for all those five years of high school (way back when…), we all have to fill out these papers (with a bunch of questions) near the end of each year, discussing what our future plans are. Before graduation, we had to write in detail about our “five-year” and “ten-year” plans for after high school. These plans, specifically, were supposed to be sent to the local school-board office.
With all of that, yet not once did my homeroom teachers ask us what we would like to do and what our passions are. No face-to-face discussions; just paper after paper.
I think to show that it is okay to follow one’s own passions, teachers and adults should strike an authentic dialogue with children and youth. But from my experience, the teachers/professors who didn’t encourage me to pursue my passions are those who haven’t discovered their own.
